What Your Heart’s Trying to Tell You: Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

Today, May 5th, marks the start of Heart Week, Australia’s national heart health awareness campaign, held every May.

It’s an opportunity for all Australians to check in with themselves and their loved ones, start a conversation about heart health, and take practical steps to reduce their risk of heart disease, the leading cause of death in Australia.

At Access Cardiology, we see firsthand how powerful early action can be. Many heart conditions can be detected and managed early, often before major symptoms appear. But that’s only possible if you know what signs to look for.

Just as no two hearts beat the same, the signs of heart problems can vary greatly from person to person. That’s why it’s so important to listen to your body and know what may signal an issue.

Here are 10 signs you shouldn’t ignore:

  1. Chest Pain

A heavy, tight, or squeezing feeling in your chest could be a sign of a heart attack or angina.

  1. Stomach Pain or Indigestion

A burning feeling in your chest or upper stomach might feel like indigestion but sometimes, it’s actually your heart. If you’re unsure, get checked.

  1. Pain in the Arm, Jaw, Neck, or Back

Heart pain doesn’t always stay in the chest. If you feel pain spreading especially down your left arm or into your jaw seek medical help.

  1. Sudden Sweating

Breaking out in a cold sweat for no reason, especially with chest pain or nausea, could be a sign of a heart attack.

  1. Choking or Tightness in the Throat

Some people feel heart-related discomfort higher up in the neck or throat. It might feel like a squeezing or choking sensation.

  1. Feeling Sick or Nauseous

Most of the time, feeling queasy will not be related to your heart. However nausea or vomiting that comes with chest pain or discomfort should be taken seriously.

  1. Swollen Ankles or Feet

Swelling in your lower legs could be a sign your heart isn’t pumping properly and fluid is building up.

  1. Leg Pain When Walking

Pain or cramping in your legs while walking might point to circulation problems, especially if you smoke or have diabetes.

  1. Unusual Tiredness

Feeling constantly worn out even with plenty of rest can sometimes be a sign of heart trouble.

  1. Heart Palpitations

A racing or irregular heartbeat can be caused by stress or caffeine, but if it’s ongoing or paired with dizziness, speak to your doctor.

Some people may experience only mild symptoms, while others might have none at all, making routine heart health checks essential.

This Heart Week, we encourage you to take your heart seriously and speak with your GP or cardiologist about any concerns.
