Holter Monitor

What is an Holter Monitoring?

A Holter monitor is a small wearable device that continuously records the electrical activity (ECG) of your heart, usually over a 24-hour period. This type of 24 hour heart monitor helps capture heart rhythm changes that may not appear during a standard ECG performed in clinic.

At Access Cardiology, we provide bulk billed Holter monitor testing for eligible patients. Our Holter monitor Perth services are available at all locations with a valid referral and Medicare eligibility.

Who Is This Test For?

Your doctor may refer you for Holter monitoring to investigate symptoms that occur intermittently or to assess your heart rhythm over a longer period of time.

Common reasons for referral include:

Fainting or blackouts

Dizziness or light-headedness

Shortness of breath

Chest pain

Irregular or fast heartbeat

You may also be referred if:

A previous ECG showed an abnormal heart rhythm that needs further investigation

Longer monitoring is required than a standard ECG to detect an intermittent irregularity

What to Expect

Holter monitoring is non-invasive and allows you to continue most normal daily activities.

Before

We recommend a bath/shower before your appointment – you will NOT be able to swim/shower during the 24-hour monitoring period.

Do not use body lotion on your chest or wear neck chains.

Please wear a two-piece outfit.

You can eat, drink, and take your usual medications unless advised otherwise

Instructions and a diary are provided on the day of fitting

During

The device is fitted by a trained technician and takes approximately 20 minutes

Small electrodes are placed on your chest and connected to a lightweight monitor worn on your waistband

You will be asked to wear the monitor continuously for the monitoring period

If you experience any symptoms, (even if they are brief or slight) you should press the EVENT button on the bottom of the device and record details in the diary provided

Please do not tamper with the cords or the battery as this may erase data from the device

Do not sleep on a switched-on electric blanket – this may interfere with the ECG recording.

Go about your normal daily activities throughout the testing period

After

Once your specified monitoring period is over you can remove the monitor yourself then return to Access Cardiology.
**A $100 fee may apply if the monitor is not returned by the specified time**

The recorded data is reviewed and reported by our specialist cardiologists

If you are not currently under the care of a cardiologist, results are sent to your referring doctor

If follow-up is required, we will arrange an appointment with one of our cardiologists

Our specialists will work with you and your GP to guide next steps and ongoing care
