What is an Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) Closure?
A Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) closure is a procedure used to close a small opening in the heart that normally seals shortly after birth.
The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic. A small incision is made in the groin and a long, thin tube (catheter) is inserted into a vein. The PFO closure device is guided through the catheter to the heart. Once positioned correctly, the device is implanted and anchored in place, where it adjusts to the unique anatomy of your heart. The procedure usually takes approximately one to two hours to complete. Once the opening is closed, the catheter is removed and the small incision is sealed.
