What is an Echocardiogram?

An Echocardiogram or Echo is an ultrasound assessment of the heart that can evaluate the structures of the heart using a series of images and videos. At Access, we perform a transthoracic echocardiogram. This test involves taking images outside the body and requires no preparation.

Why has my doctor referred me for an echocardiogram?

There are many reasons your doctor my request an Echo:

• Heart failure or signs and symptoms of heart failure.
• Heart murmurs.
• Congenital heart defects.

Additionally, an echocardiogram can also show your specialist:

• How your heart muscle is pumping.
• The size of your heart.
• How your valves are working
• If there are any signs of fluid around your heart.
• If there are signs of blood clots inside your heart.
• If there are any problems with your heart’s major blood vessels.

What is involved in an Echocardiogram?

• A trained Cardiac Sonographer will place a special probe on various parts of the chest wall to view the heart from different directions.
• Subsequently, a detailed assessment of the heart valves, heart muscle and blood flow are then performed.
• Images of your heart are displayed on a computer and screen recorded for observation and reporting.

What happens after an Echocardiogram?

• Our Specialist Cardiologists will report on the results and images.
• If you are not currently under the care of a cardiologist, we will write to your referring doctor to advise of the results. This takes between 3-5 days in most cases.
• If necessary, we will schedule an appointment with a cardiologist.
• Following this, our specialists will work with you to develop an appropriate care plan for future management.
